The Rev. Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch by Sir Henry Raeburn The Rev. Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch

The Water tensed at his instruction
and trout gazed up at his incisive feet.
We felt that God must be in clarity like this
and listened to the dull glens echo
the striation of his silver blades.

Far out on Duddingston Loch
our true apostle sped
with twice the speed of Christ
who walked on waves.

We saw him harrow ice
with grace of the elect
and scar the transubstantiation
of wintered elements.

With a sense of real presence
he crossed our loch;
what need of vestments
with such elegant legs?

Un Tour d'Ecosse (Carcanet, 2001) Welcome to my website! This is my first venture into cyberspace as you will probably be able to tell from the following pages. Hopefully it will get better as I learn the ropes! The aim is simply to introduce you to my poetry and highlight news and forthcoming readings. I've published three full collections to date: Paris-Forfar (Polygon, 1994), Un Tour d'Ecosse (Carcanet, 2001) and In My Father's House (Carcanet, 2005). If you like any of these poems, check out Carcanet's own website at www.carcanet.co.uk where you can buy these books and find out about other poets published by one of the best small poetry presses around.

On this site you'll find a selection of lyric and experimental poems as well as reviews, essays, interviews, translations and links to the pages of other poets I admire and enjoy.
